Born in Lebanon, Missouri, Army Staff Sergeant Johnathan Lee Williams grew up in Camdenton, Missouri in a Law Enforcement rich family. He graduated from Camdenton High School in 2001. After graduating he worked in the civilian sector before enlisting into the United States Army on January 14, 2003 for a term of 4 years.
SSG Williams attended Infantry Basic training and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia and received his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he was trained as a Psychological Operations Specialist, and graduated September 11, 2003. After his AIT, SSG Williams completed the Special Operations Language Training course where he learned French. Shortly thereafter, SSG Williams was assigned to Bravo Company, 9th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne), where he served as a Psychological Operations Specialist on Tactical Psychological Operations Team (TPT) 943. In September 2004, SSG Deployed to Fallujah, Iraq and was attached to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. During his tour in Iraq, SSG Williams served as his team’s driver during the battle Fallujah, and safely maneuvered his team through the streets of Fallujah under heavy fire for several days. During combat operations, SSG Williams’ team was responsible for the evacuation of over 400 civilians from the 1st Marine Division’s first objective, and was also responsible for the surrender of more than 150 enemy combatants. SSG Williams returned from Iraq in April.
In August 2005, SSG Williams conducted tactical PSYOP operations in support of United States Special Forces operations at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Four days after returning to Ft. Bragg from JRTC, SSG Williams was deployed to New Orleans, Louisiana in support of Hurricane Katrina Humanitarian Relief, in which his efforts aided in the rescue of thousands of Americans.
In October 2005, SSG Williams was assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 6th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne) where he served as the battalion’s Training, Ranges, and Ammunition NCO until October 2007. He was then assigned to Alpha Company, 6th Military Information Support Battalion, where he served as a Psychological Operations Specialist on a Military Information Support Team (MIST). In February 2008, SSG Williams deployed to Ethiopia in support of strategic interests and mission of the Embassy of the United States of America. His efforts were essential in meeting the national strategic interests in promoting regional stability and enhancing security for an import ally, as well as helped bring religious groups together through radio programs, advertisement and television commercials. SSG Williams received a Letter of Recommendation and Commendation from Donald Yamamoto, the United States Ambassador to Ethiopia, as well as a Letter of Commendation from Colonel Curtis D. Boyd, the Commander of the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne). SSG Williams returned to Fort Bragg in November 2008.
In June 2009, SSG Williams attended the Psychological Operations Advanced Leaders Course, in which he graduated in the top 10% of his class, resulting in his name being placed on the Commandant’s List.
In September 2009, SSG Williams returned to Headquarters Support Company, 6th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne), and served as the company’s Training and Administration NCO. During his tenure, he ensure the company completed required annual training, advised the Commander on training statistics, requirements, and acted as a liaison between the soldiers and the command team.
In September 2010, SSG Williams was assigned to Alpha Company, 9th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne) where he served as a Team Leader until April 2011. He then served as the Training NCO for Headquarters Support Company, 9th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne) until September 2012, at which time he was assigned to Delta Company. In August 2013, SSG Williams attended the Tactical Information Operations Planner’s Course in Massachusetts, in which he graduated in the top 10% of his class, resulting in his name being placed on the Commandant’s List. He served as a Team Leader with Delta Company, 9th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne) until March 2014.
In March 2014, SSG Williams was assigned as a Military Information Support Operations Sergeant in Alpha Company, 7th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne). In May 2014, he deployed to Germany to support missions with focus on Special Operations Command Africa (SOCAFRICA). He served as the Regional Information Support Team (RIST) Operations NCOIC and Social Media Cell Chief. In November 2014, SSG Williams returned to Ft. Bragg and transferred to Bravo Company, 7th Military Information Support Battalion. In May 2015, he deployed again to Germany to provide the same support to SOCAFRICA as his previous deployment, and returned the following October. SSG Williams is currently developing a developing a social media analysis reach-back capability at Fort Bragg, North Carolina that will serve to provide situational awareness during operations within the United State Africa Command (USAFRICOM) area of operations, as well as assist in gathering measures of effectiveness for MISO programs and series for deployed elements.
SSG Williams’ awards and decorations include: the Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, four Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, German Parachutist Badge, two Chilean Parachutist Badges, and the Driver’s Badge for Wheeled Vehicles. SSG Williams also has numerous certificates of achievement.
SSG Williams married to his wife Angel in 2012. They have five children; Sondra, Madisyn, Julie, Kameron, and Abel. SSG Williams is currently studying to achieve his degree in General Education through Fayetteville Technical Community College. He is also a volunteer firefighter, in which his firefighting efforts were awarded with the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
