Here's a simple tutorial on getting some good layer blending lighting effects, Im pretty sure this can be accomplished in gimp,but i could be wrong idk ? But anyways thought you might be interested ,its a simple tutorial and you can play around with different brushes and layer colors to get some interesting effects on your text lettering's or strokes .
