New Professional Gaming League FormedDIRECTV, IGN, and others announce Championship Gaming Series.
Video games are growing. There's no denying it. If you need further proof, check out the new Championship Gaming Series. This is a brand new professional gaming league formed by a partnership between DIRECTV, IGN Entertainment, Microsoft's Xbox, Mountain Dew, Fox Interactive Media, and Best Buy. The CGS will be broadcast exclusively to DIRECTV's 15 million viewers and will take a new approach to competitive gaming.
This new league will focus on an ongoing series of competitions where teams from all across the country duke it out for the "Dew Cup." "Unprecedented" prize money is promised for the winners. What does that mean? Steven F. Roberts, Vice President/General Manager of DIRECTV, says that "the prize money will be more than they've seen in the past." That's saying a lot considering that other leagues have offered hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money.
The episodes themselves will be headed up by Michael Burkes, one of the best-known producers in sports broadcasting. Burkes has produced for the Olympics, Super Bowls, and is often credited for single-handedly turning around the way the NBA is broadcast on television. The competitions will be captured by a new technology that will take viewers "inside the actual game competitions."
David Hill, the president of entertainment at DIRECTV, will be heading up the CGS group. Hill is known for bringing many broadcasting innovations to Fox Sports. Look for more details on the Championship Gaming Series soon.
