History

For those who got the fourth volume of the game before playing the first three are missing out. The Devil May Cry series is a compelling and heartfelt story that will show you that even the most evil and deadly of people can cry. The first game was released in 2001 by Capcom. It was originally released for the PS2 but now the fourth volume of the series has been released for the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

In first three games you were a contract demon killer by the name of Dante. Dante is the son of a Devil named Sparda, who betrayed his own kind to defend the human race. In the first game you were hired by a girl named Trish to help destroy the lord of the underworld, Mundus. The second game had a completely irrelevant storyline so I won’t go into detail. The third game was a prequel to the first. You went into your brother Virgil’s castle to destroy him. He was the main villain. There you met a girl named Lady, a girl with a NICE bazooka. You defeat him and the story goes on….

Story

In this game you are a boy named Nero, a half devil, half human just like Dante. The beginning story to the game is you hunting down a man in red. Those who have played the previous games know exactly who it is. As the game progresses you are caught in between two enemies trying to discover who the true enemy is. You are sent by an order (or cult in my opinion) that worships the “Savior”, known to us as Sparda. As you dig deeper into the game you find dark secrets that dwell within the order. The story is truly heartfelt. Throughout the game you grow a great connection with the characters and the story that will be hard to forget. There’s a new cast of characters that’ll exit you and scare you. Plus some old and sexy characters return…

Graphics/Gameplay

The graphics in the game are clear and beautiful. The cutscenes are as fun to watch as it is to play the game. The art work on each character gives them both cool and handsome traits. The artwork on the monsters is outstanding. The monsters look crisp, horrifying, and real. Every time you're about to have a boss battle you’ll say “ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?” The game play is outstanding. Every time you hit a combo you say to yourself “How the f*** did I do that!” This game’s genre is called Stylish Action. This means that you use stylish combos to defeat your enemy, though the game can be frustrating at times. If you die in battle you can either restart the WHOLE level and get the items you used back or just go back a few parts but you don’t get the items back. But that just makes it more rewarding to beat the game. As the game progresses it gets much harder. You can buy abilities either at the statue in mid-game or you can buy them before you start the level. You can buy combos, attacks, advancements to those attacks, and more. You buy these items with souls. The more people you kill the more souls you gain. I’d advise you either save up or do a lot of killing. Every time you purchase something in the abilities section, the prices of everything goes up. Every time you buy something the items section the price of that specific item goes up.

You have three choices for attacks. You can use either guns, a sword, or your right arm. Your right arm holds special demonic powers that can pull a demon toward you or pull you toward it (if it’s a big boss). It can also grab enemies and throw them to the ground. You can use the arm to grab certain objects in the air to create more obstacles yet make you feel like Tarzan. You have infinite ammunition in the game and you never have to reload. Its just the bullets don’t do too much damage. As the game progresses you’ll unlock different guns, abilities, combos, and swords. You’ll recognize some of the swords if you've played the previous games.

You can also go in to a powerful Devil mode called “Devil Trigger”. There is a gauge below your health gauge to indicate the duration of your Devil Trigger. The controls are very fun to handle. You can just press random buttons and kill 4 opponents at the same time. Though if you see the combo list you will be a little confused. It will be hard to get bored of the game.

There are also items you’ll need to survive like the Orbs, Holy Water, Stars, etc. There are seven types of orbs: Red Orbs can be found any where and are used to buy items. Blue orbs can found in fragments or bought whole which are used make your health bar larger. White Orbs restore your Devil Trigger gauge. Green orbs cannot be purchased, they can only be found in the game. They restore a portion of your health. Purple Orbs work like Blue Orbs only they make your Devil Trigger gauge bigger. Gold Orbs are the rarest, they revive you in battle. Holy Water is also very rare. It brings great pain to all enemies around you. The Stars can be bought in sizes in the store. Each star has either a S (for small), M (for medium), L (for large) at the end of the name.

Secret Missions

Hidden throughout the game are hidden tiny signs with Japanese characters on them. If you click A (for Xbox 360) or X (For PS3) then you can access the secret missions they hold. The missions are usually scenes where you are fighting enemies. You are either timed on killing all enemies or you must kill the demons in specific ways. There’s never a way of telling. To quit the secret mission you must find a door while playing and go through it. In large lettering it will say “FAILURE”. But be warned, any damage you receive in the secret mission will stay there as you proceed through the level unless you do find a green orb or use a star.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack is a mix between heavy metal and Goth rock. Though the cutscenes usually have a very creepy organ playing in the background to indicate the importance of the scene. When there is no action it’s just a very mellow organ softly playing to strike a feeling of uneasiness into the gamer. I don’t believe any of the music is popular. Most of it is independent, but through the battle sequences the rock comes through that just makes you want to go ALL OUT. You can buy the soundtrack with the collector’s edition.

Collectors Edition

The collectors edition is $20 more than the actual game. But it comes with a metal case, volume 1 of Devil May Cry: The Animated Series on DVD, including four complete episodes of the anime, and a bonus DVD. The bonus DVD includes: Making of Devil May Cry 4, Music from the soundtrack, Digital art book, and PC content (screen savers, wallpapers, icons).

Why to Keep Playing

During the credits you have to fend off monsters from hurting your girlfriend for 90 seconds. If you defend her for the 90 seconds then you get a secret ending. Also you can unlock costumes and characters by beating the game on certain difficulties. You can even show off to your friends your score on the game and unlock achievements. You can get yourself 1000 AP and feel like a TRUE DEVIL SLAYER! I can assure you I will be playing this game until Devil May Cry 5! After years and years I can almost assure you will come back to it and say “Those were the good days…”
