DON'T FALL FOR THE OLD BANNANA IN THE TAILPIPE

My xbox live gamertag and netpassport have been stolen. This is the story. I was talking to XGC x0 0 7x XI on the phone last night and he tells me of this website to go check out new COD4 maps, which he has heard about through multiple xbox live messages. So I go to this site and it looks like xbox.com so I enter in my login thinking that the maps must be on xbox.com. After entering my netpassport it signs me into my xbox account. I did not think much of it, just thought that the link was bad and that the maps where not there.
What really happened was this. Someone was using that website to steal my netpassport information. They then proceeded to change my netpassport password and recovered my gamertag onto their xbox 360 (you no longer need credit card information to do an account recovery just the email and password). Next they changed my gamertag and started buying microsoft points on my account, which bills to my credit card ($250.00 so far).
What to do if this happens to you.

1. Immediately change your netpassport or live Id password at
www.passport.net

2. Call Xbox customer service and let them know what has happened (1-800-4my-xbox)

3. Contact your bank or credit card company to dispute the charges

4. Recover your gamertag back onto your xbox with your new netpassport password

How you can prevent this from happening to you. Never sign into a website with you information unless you are sure that you are actually at the website you intend to be. It is a big warning sign to type in an unrelated web address and end up at what appears to be a trusted site. Also please do not pass along information such as web address that you are not sure about. I am sure that the multiple people who sent out this website did not go there for themselves, to many times in Xiled Gaming we simply copy and paste messages to each other without considering the validity of the information that we are exchanging.

Good luck Otto - I want to know why they are bothering to buy the MS points when they are directly related to your account anyways, and once MS fixes the problem and you recover your account, what they are planning to do with the nothing that they have received?

I was definitely a little freaked out when I saw your "new" tag pop up...

Lol, have we not learned any thing from MySpace Sir Otto? I may hate MySpace, but at least they warn how to protect yourself from logging in to fictitious sites.

I'm sure that they have been busy downloading movies and games onto their console with the microsoft points that apparently I am buying.

I never fell into that whole myspace fad, and since I was in the middle of working on the subscription stuff while talking to double I was not paying enough attention to what I was signing into. I pretty much blame him for the whole fiasco. lol

Haha, 007 FTL again. I've never really used MySpace either, but people complain about how they got their account hacked by logging into a fictitious MySpace page all the time.

F***ing phishing scams, they're everywhere nowadays. I even had Abbey Bank try to get me to "update my information", despite the fact I'm with HSBC, not Abbey.

Hope you get that mess sorted out!

So I did not warn you in time sir :(

I thought I was on the ball
nope, by the time the my gamertag name changed, they had already changed my netpassport password and recovered my account on their console.

Also I am still in the process of trying to reset my password through window live, it can take up to 24 hrs. (this blows)

I suppose movies make sense, but once your recover your tag, the games won't work anymore...

Blame Double! It's like blaming Canada!

I wonder if that was the link that Caviezel's IM sent me yesterday - it was some weird link, and I sent him a message back telling him that I thought that he might have a virus. Someone should probably let him know (is his tag still the same?)

Wow, that doth sucketh... Is XBox going to let you change your tag back for free, or do you have to get more points and do it yourself?

Hi, I'm just gonna quote this article in my Squadrons forums. I think a lot of people would be unaware this could happen, it is amazing what people will do for a free ride.
