What?s up with all the WWII games out there? Now don?t get me wrong I love a little Nazi bashing every now and again, especially after I?ve shed a tear watching Private Ryan or Band of Brothers. I especially enjoy the great gameplay involved with Brother?s in Arms: Earned in Blood. The realism in games like that really make you feel like you?re crouching in a French village fighting against the heavies of the Third Reich alongside your Grandfather. But what I really long to play is a great flight sim game.
So I recently added Heroes of the Pacific to my game stable, now once again I was dropped into WWII this time in the Pacific Theater against the Japanese. You are put right into the action as you take to the skies against an overwhelming invasion force bent on the destruction of Pearl Harbor and seeing as how your brother perishes aboard one of the burning ships, you take the fight straight to them. At times you and your wingmen are pit against literally hundreds of planes, some secondary mission goals are to shoot down 100 planes. This game is an actual historic look at what it was like in the Pacific during WWII with actual flight missions and campaigns to recover territories in the South Pacific Island chain. You can fly all types of planes from dogfighters to torpedo bombers and upon completing the missions all planes US or otherwise that were in the mission are added to your armada to be used for multiplayer or XBOX Live online play. After every mission you can upgrade your planes by spending points earned for better armament, armor and mobility. There are two options for flying in the game, one is for the basic straightforward no frills dogfighter and the second is for the more advanced pilot. The multiplayer and online play is smooth with no lag to be found, just make sure you have unlocked and upgraded some heavy duty birds because you don?t want to play with a clunker. The game types range from Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and one where you try to sink the other teams Aircraft Carrier before they sink yours. All in all this game is a great game for flight sim enthusiasts who enjoy some good dogfighting or if you are a WWII history buff.
