GAME REVIEW: RESIDENT EVIL SERIES.

Some of the older gamers will remember a time when survival horror was actually well... scary? Resident Evil, and I mean the original Resident Evil and all its PS1 glory, was a survival horror game where the player found themselves as a member of STARS, a police group quite like S.W.A.T. The elite of the elite in Raccoon City Police Department. The player is trapped in a mansion and soon comes face to face with flesh eating zombies. With limited weapons and resources, (seriously, that knife though. Doesn't kill the zombies at all! How hard is it to stab a zombie in the brain?! They're decaying for gods sake!) the player goes on quite the thrill. I enjoyed it as a child and I still enjoy it today.
Resident Evil 2 still holds up to the survival horror name. The player is Leon S. Kennedy, a new police officer to Raccoon City and on his first day is caught in a struggle for survival as the T-Virus is unleashed on an unsuspecting Raccoon City -the same virus that caused the flesh eaters in the first game. Resident Evil 2 only improved on what the previous game had left, bringing new characters into a doomsday situation, and a storyline that is still very playable today, if the player doesn't only look for graphics. Resident Evil 2 is my favorite of the series, and I won't bring any spoilers into discussion in case any gamers might just happen to play this thriller in the near future, but truly expect the survival horror ride of your life.
I never played Resident Evil 3, so I can't give my opinion on the game, but any readers are more than welcome to leave comments about the game. That being said, lets move onto Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 4, although at one time my favorite in the series, takes away quite a bit in my opinion from the franchise. It moved away from flesh eating zombies, bringing instead a virus known as Las Plagus, what I assume to mean "The Plague" which is a sickness that causes madness and mutations in those it infects. The player is once again Leon Scott Kennedy, no longer a policeman, but a government agent, sent to rescue the Presidents Daughter. How did this remote South American religious cult find the presidents daughter? Never discussed. How did they get the funds to track and kidnap her? Never discussed. How did they slip past the numerous Secret Service agents that undoubtedly surround the presidents daughter? Never. Discussed. Resident Evil 4 is the birth of the shoot 'em ups in Resident Evil as far as I'm concerned, though it still tried to be suspenseful. It had moments where I was genuinely worried for Leon's existence in this game world, and is a good game, just not a good Resident Evil game, so if the player who is looking for survival horror picks up this game, they will be disappointed. If the player approaches the game with a new outlook, I think most will be pleased.
Resident Evil 5. I. F***ING. HATE. THIS. GAME. It completely tosses aside all that Resident Evil has brought to the table. No, not only that, it spits and urinates on it. Resident Evil 5 is 100x worse than Resident Evil 4 in the shoot 'em up arena, doesn't try at ALL to be scary (and isn't that what we expect from Resident Evil??) the storyline is boring in my opinion, I played it just last week and can't remember all that much of it. Chris from the first game is now in Africa, how he went from STARS to UN/US Super Soldier bent on destroying Umbrella is never discussed, and this game brings once again the Las Plagus from number 4, however this time in tribal African groups in the desert. Other than for making this article, I don't even ACKNOWLEDGE the existance of this game. This game downright PISSES ME OFF. But, I can understand why some players might like a Resident Evil game that is pretty much just an over the shoulder Halo/COD hybrid with African tribes suffering from a virus made by the South Americans to enslave the South American continent and control the presidents daughter. Confusing? Yeah. I thought so.
Resident Evil 6 is a VAST improvement from its predecessor. It's still kind of a shoot 'em up, but no more so than number. The player is Leon, Chris, and Wesker, through 3 storylines that intertwine. Depending on who you play as the enemies are different, ranging from Zombies to mercs. Resident Evil 6 is by no means a survival horror, but it is suspenseful at times. It's a large game, one I haven't even finished yet, but it is definately worth playing. So far there's no rock punching like in number 5 (Chris.... WTF bromigo?!) and most of it makes sense as far as character choices and developments go. Definately worth picking up.
I'm not going to review games like Operation Raccoon City or Code Veronica just because there's to many of them. Resident Evil is a great franchise that has come a long way in the past years. It's had its ups and downs (Resident Evil 5 is a DOWN. DOWN I SAY!) just like any gaming company will have. But still... It holds a place in my heart in gaming, as I'm sure it does many of you. But these are just my thoughts on a timeless series. Except 5. Thank you for reading, and please comment if you'd like, enjoy your day.
