If you think about it, it’s a way to greatly reduce people from constantly changing their user name. It’s not Aol. lol

EXACTLY!

That was the main reason behind making the change..... in addition to bringing in more revenue (for basically nothing). Old Gamertags are not recycled back into the system, so any GT you or anyone else had made in the past has been sealed away, never to be used again... meaning there are only a finite amount of potential names out there.

To keep people from changing theirs every day, they inplemented a small fee (less than $10). Which is enough to discourage people from doing it non-stop, and low enough in price to make it affordable for people who want or need to.

Me-thinks it was a great idea. Beats having to start a new GT just because you want your name changed, though I hope MS recycles very old GTs at some point. Not doing anything with them is just dumb.

yeah i agree... 10 bucks seems a little high... i think they could have done it for 5 or so, but i won't be picky... i don't know if they can recycle gt's due to privacy issues (peoples identities are associated with their GT)

i see your point, but do you agree how confusing it would be if say someone went offline for a long period of time say a council member or a pro gamer, then someone else nabbed their gamertag the second it was available... that's like identity fraud, and i believe that's y they don't recycle them... i.e. XGC Knight XI hasn't been around for a long time now, and i'm sure his gold tag is expired, if someone picked that up, he could confuse and trick a lot of people

there should be in the terms of service agreement a set time limit that a gamertag or microsoft live id or zune id be allowed to go unused for before its sent back into the pool. cause there alot of usernames and gamertags as u can imagine that are just sitting there not getting used that were either one months or 48 hrs or so on.

^ Agree'd. It would be nice if something was put into the Live Terms of Use that basically gave you a set amount of time to either recover it/etc before it trickled back into the system, BUT i definitely see where Coleslaw has a point about basically making it identity fraud. That would make it a grey legal area for sure.... doubt MS even wants to touch the idea.
