GEARS OF WAR TIPS AND TRICKS

Building Gears of War Skills
Gears of War® may be the most anticipated game ever to be released for Xbox 360™: With its breathtaking visuals and heart-pounding combat, it represents the most powerful sensory assault next-gen gaming has to offer. There is a mountain of intense gameplay to be found here, and you aren't likely to live through many mistakes, so pay attention.

The Locust Horde is out to slaughter you, but if you take the following tips to heart, you'll have the edge you need to slaughter the Locust instead.

Points of Interest
Gearsdoes a phenomenal job of keeping you pointed in the right direction. Simply press Y and you will automatically look at the nearest point of interest. Just don't forget to use it. Press Y to see where the button is for opening a door, to find a crater the Locust are swarming from, or even to find another soldier calling for help.

Preemptive Grenades
The Locusts literally crawl out of the ground from Emergence Holes, craters that access their tunnels. If you spot one of these Emergence Holes, you have just a few seconds to get a grenade or two into the hole before the Locusts begin to emerge. If you time it right, you can cause massive damage to a group of enemies, and make it a lot easier to pick off the leftovers.

Mobile Cover
When taking cover behind a burnt out car, you can repeatedly tap X to push it forward, creating wonderfully mobile cover. This is especially valuable (and often vital) at night time, where the cover can also acts as a torch, keeping the swarms away.

Essential Cover
To be clear: You cannot play GoW the way you played Halo® 2, standing out in the open and firing away. Learning to properly use cover is the most essential skill you must master in Gears. Every moment of combat should be spent taking advantage of cover, and when you're not behind it, you must be looking for it.

Success in Gears of War hinges on your effective use of cover, but the game works with you to take advantage of it quickly and comfortably. To leap over your cover and run ahead to the next, simply press forward and hold down the A button. Spin to new cover on your left or right by pressing in that direction and holding A again.

Taking Damage
Gears of War uses a health system similar to Call of Duty® 3 and Halo® 2. When you see a bloody symbol (called the Crimson Omen) start materializing in the center of your screen, back off. If the symbol becomes solid, you die. If you take cover, however, your health will re-charge. Once your screen is clear, you're good to go.

Chainsaw Rarity
Yes, it is great fun to use your chainsaw on an enemy and unleash all its gory glory, but you should only use it as a last ditch effort, not your primary attack method. Attempting melee attacks leaves you particularly vulnerable to the Locust's own vicious melee attacks. Remember to rev the chainsaw using the right trigger before making your attack.

Target Acquisition
The destroyed beauty look of the game combined with the bulky armored suits of your comrades can often make distinguishing between friends and foes a difficult task. However, there's a simple solution. Your targeting reticule will turn red when it passes over an enemy. If it stays white, you know to keep your finger off the trigger. This helpful rule of thumb applies to multiplayer as well.

Machinegun Nests
If you encounter a heavy machine gun nest, always make it your first priority. Simply killing the enemy manning the gun will not eliminate the threat. A replacement can easily take his place. Your fellow soldiers can keep the gunner busy while you flank him. There will often be a good path of attack if you look carefully. Finally, whenever possible, man the gun yourself to take out the remaining enemies.

Squad Tactics
The A.I. that controls your teammates is excellent. They will kill with deadly efficiency, and often provide excellent distractions and cover for you while you take out the enemy. Always keep their positions in mind as you determine your attack strategies.

General Orders
Once you have your own squad, you'll have the opportunity to relate simple orders to the men under your command. It can be easy to focus on the combat and forget this ability, but ordering your men to regroup or focus an attack can make the difference between life and death. This can be especially useful for flanking tactics. Order your soldiers to lay down fire while you sneak around the enemy and take them out from a better angle.

There are many layers to the combat in Gears, but if you keep these basics in mind, the intuitive nature of the game should help you through the rest. Just watch out for those Locusts.

Hint: Fighting the Wretches

When fighting wretches--the small, shrieking enemies that don't use weapons--attack with melee strikes. The best melee strikes come from weapons other than your grenades and Lancer chainsaw rifle. The chainsaw attack is too slow to combat the swarming wretches, so stick to quick-hit melee punches for instant kills.

Hint: Regain Health

Unlike most games, you can regain all of your health in Gears of War without the need for health packs. Simple stay in cover for a few seconds and watch as the bright-red gear in the center of the screen fades away. When the gear has completely disappears, your health will be completely full.

Hint: Avoiding the Kryll

In the second chapter of the game, you'll be swarmed by enemy kryll if you so much as set foot in the dark. To avoid being attacked, stay in the light at all times. When there's no light in sight, look for propane canisters you can blow up to create some flames that'll scare off the kryll.

Hint: Quick Reload

When reloading your weapon, watch the upper-right corner of the screen for a meter that counts down. Press the reload button a second time when the meter's moving bar matches up with the stationary bar. This will give you a super fast reload and put you back in the fight quicker than normal. However, if you mis-time the second button press your reload will take longer than normal.

Hint - Berserker Beat Down (Then Beat Yourself Down)

To defeat the Beserker at the end of act one, simply dive to the side when she charges at you. Run through the doorway to your right and continue to the door at the end of the room and face your back to it. Get the Berserkers attention by shooting at her or revving the chainsaw then, dive away at the last moment when she charges causing her to break the door down for you.

Continue this to get through the next two doors. When you finally lure her into the courtyard simply use the Hammer of Dawn twice to take her down. [If Dom is killed the mission is over, so revive him if he's knocked down]

Hint: Finding Cog Tags

There are thirty hidden Cog Tags scattered throughout the game. They're small and sometimes hard to find, but there's a a mark you can look out for that'll make finding the Cog Tags easier. Look for large, red Gear logos pasted on the walls--if you find a room with this large Gear logo, examine the room and you're sure to find a Cog Tag somewhere.

Short Guide to Legit Ranked Achievements
Okay, I want to start off by saying, this is not a flame at boosters. I just dont feel like doing that (boosting) with this game, its too much fun, and if you follow these suggestions, maybe you will find it to be fun too! This is stuff that I have recently started to implement myself, and it seems to be working well.

Play with friends? Sure that's cool, sometimes you have to in order to fill the freaking room. I simply suggest letting everyone in the room know, they can quit out if they dont like it. Its still a fair fight, and our only way of playing with our friends the way we want while still working on achievements.

Now, the details (simple for sure).

Play Execution ONLY to start out! You can get your curb stomp/chainsaw/revive achievements WAY faster this way, because unless you headshot them, boomshot, or grenade tag them, you have to perform a kill move or they can A button back to life or get revived by a team mate. Also, the same happens in reverse for you and your team, so you can REVIVE team members and work on that achievement too.

Also, when I play 3 round matches, I get a lot of QUITTERS, and they take away your stats from what I understand (that explains why I dont have near as many kills as I thought I did). So try and avoid them.

Now I play only 5 or 7 point matches (7 preferred). Also, I suggest playing on the same map that you like, over and over, and over. You will memorize the weapon locations, enemy patterns (if there are any), and help your team mates improve on that map just by playing with you. I have NEVER had one person quit in a 7 point match, although I am sure it will happen and I will be ****ed when it does. I am able to get at least 10 kills, and at least 10 revives in each 7 point match. You do the math, it wont be long before I get one of these durn achievements!

STICK TOGETHER- I saw the guy on the GoW preview event videos online saying it over and over, and he knew what he was talking about. It sounds routine, and my teams always say 'we will stay together' but then they run off for a weapon by themselves instead of covering our flank, and the whole thing is over quickly. If you stick together, you get alot of 2 on 1 shooting sessions, and you can revive each other much easier.

Grenade stick / Boomshot groups of enemies. Getting one of them is good if you dont go down too, but when I bum rush at least 2 dudes by holding A, and have my grenades armed, I press B and jam myself up against the guy. His partner(s) alot of the time will try and get a chainsaw kill or shotgun blast. By the time they do (which is fine with me since its a 2 or 3 for 1) the grenade pops and they are red chunks.

Reserve sniper for later in the round, where it is 1 on 1 or maybe 2 on 2. At this point, people slow down and use cover a lot more, and if you can isolate yourself without the other side knowing where you are, you will have ample opportunity to track their movements and pick them off.

General Multiplayer Tips
  • Dont rush an enemy that knows you intend to kill him with the chainsaw bayonet. If you get shot while you rev the chainsaw bayonet, your forced to lower it. This makes you extememly vulnerable to attack. If you seek a melee brawl, it's best to fire the shotgun or one of the pistol to render the enemy's chainsaw useless. Or, if your foe soesn't have the Lancer equipped, use another weapon, such as the Torquebow, to hit him with it melee-style. Better yet, for the Frag-tag!
  • If you find yourself outnumbered, look for an adequate hiding place and wait for the timer to countdown to a Draw. It might not be the most honorable route, but it just might keep your team in the match. Consider heading back to the spawn point and crouching in a corner, out of sight, if worse comes to worst, at least you'll see your opponent approaching.
  • Know your initial destination before the match begins, and practice Roadie Running to that spot so that you don't bump into any obsticals. Bumping into something suring a Roadie Run slows your character and can make teammates run into you, thereby giving the opponent a decided advantace in the race to acquire advanced weaponry.
  • In Assassination mode, do not run off by yourself as the leader!!!! It's imperative that the leader stay with at least one (and preferably two) teammates at ALL TIMES. We can't stress that enough.
  • Get acquainted with the characters' voices, more specifically their utterances as the attempt perfect Active Reloads. This is especally benefical in a one-on-one standoff, as there's nothing better than knowing your opponents gun just jammed! Rush him for the win!!1
  • Some of the weapons make easily identifiable noises that are audible through most of the battlefield. Thse weapons, such as the Torquebow and Boomshot, also have very limited ammuntion. Try counting silently to yourself each blash you hear form one of these weapons; you may get tipped off when you enemy runs dry.
  • The execution game type encourages players to rush forward and eleminate downed enemies, but don't rush in blindly! Many times, players leav3e a downed teammate out in the open as bait, waiting for an overzealous opponent to move in for the execution. Don't go in for the kill until you know the coast is clear.
  • There are may instances in which it pays to split up the team and send 3 members straight toward the enemy while the 4th silently flanks. The opponents might not take the bait and commit knowing 2 more enemies lurk the battlefield. Plus, it's harder for the opposing team to ignore an advancing threesome, which makes them more likely to call in reinforcements. this presents a great opportunity for the flanking player to deliver mass damage.
  • Players who always utilice cover and remember to roll often are erratically survive the longest in mulitplayer. There's nothing easier to kill than an enemy who runs in a straight line or stand out in the open.
  • Don't steal kills! There's nothing more annoying than working hard to down a enemy and then having one of your own teammates snipe him in the head as your going for the curb stomp. Don't do it unless you agree ahead of time that is is okay.
  • If you get tagged with a Frag Grenade, immediately leap toward the nearest enemy player and take him down with you. Similarly, if you attempt to Frag-tag a player, quickly roll away form him before the grenade explodes, else you'll likely get taken out in the blast. And don't try this attack without warning nearby teammates!
  • Arguably the most important tip of all is to learn the maps and memorize weapon locations. This way, when HUD indicates that a Torquebow or Lonshot has been picked up, you can quickly ascertain where the enemy is locatedand react accordingly. Relay this info to you teammates and adapt you tactics.
  • Lastly, you must communicate! Your Xbox 360 came with a microphone for a reason - use it!!! All of the mulitplayer games in Gears Of War are team-based and, as a result, require cooperation and teamwork to win. A team full of experienced solo playerd may win for a while, but even a team with average talent that communicate and plans its attacks cooperatively will almost always come out on top.

What to shoot for
To make life easier, I'm going to break down the main areas in three points, which I will name regions 1, 2 and 3.

Region 1 is the area involving the neck and collarbone area.

Region 2 is the area involving the trunk or chest area

Region 3 is the area involving the feet and groin.

Booting up a mock mp game, I tested all the weapons on a dummy to discern the ideal zone, or where a weapon will do the most damage. This is what I found:

An unzoomed sniper rifle has a chance of performing an ex. shot from a distance if you aim for region 1. A zoomed sniper rifle causes DBNO if you aim for region 1, unless you get a headshot. A shotgun at close range is an instant ex. kill no matter what region you aim for. An assault rifle does best at mid range if you aim for region 1, allowing the climb to line up for a headshot. Pistols should generally be aimed at region 2. Surprisingly, both the pistol and the magnum do more damage if you aim for region 3 at close range. Aim grenades at region 1 or 2, if you want a direct kill. An alien assault rifle is a 2 burst kill at mid range if you aim at region 1 or 2. If you aim at region 3 with most weapons, it will cause a slight stun, which you can use to pepper your opponent until your teammate goes in for the kill. All guns inflict maximum damage from behind. The alien assault rifle is a 1 burst kill in this scenario if you aim for region 1. Anything you want tested, feel free to mention.

Frag-taggers tip
This isn't a tip for them but a tip against them. Let's say you see a guy with their frags out, don't bother chainsawing them and shoty them only if there is no other chioce. Just get to safe distance and shoot at them ith the lancer, longshot, or hammerburst. Lets say you do get tagged, roll at the nearest enemy of if you can, chainsaw the tagger . Even with this stratagy they 'll still get you sometimes. There isn't a foolproof stratagy against frag-taggers(please correct me if I'm wrong).

Minor Tips and Tricks
Reload Audio Cues
When you're firing (Lancer & Hammerburst at least)and your clip starts to run low, your gun will start to make a clicking noise with every shot, that way you know to keep your eye on the ammo and start planning for a reload

Auto-Reload Melee Trick
Sometimes during a firefight, you will inevitably stop watching your ammo level and an unexpected auto-reload will occur. If you're looking to keep your damage boost high using the active reload, this can be a real problem. The solution is to press the melee button if your active reload meter has already passed the small white zone. The reload will be canceled and as soon as you release the melee button, it will start over. This will allow you to pay more attention to the active reload meter. If your weapon isn't empty, it will just cancel the reload. However, there are 2 issues with this trick. First, it doesn't seem to work while you're taking damage and second, it will cause you to leave any cover you are behind. This isn't an issue if you are standing behind a wall, but it can be disastrous if you are crouched and it causes you to stand up.

Shotgun Roll
When faced with an enemy about 5 to 6 feet away who is about to kill you, pull out your shotgun and hold forward while pressing A to barrel roll into the enemy. As soon as you come out of the roll start shooting the shotgun. If your roll was straight you will be aligned perfectly for a one shot kill.

Grenade Tag
With fragmentation grenades equipped, sneak up behind an enemy and hit 'B'. Make sure you run away to a safe distance to watch them blow up.

Skipping a cutscene
Press X and A at the same time in order to skip a cutscene. Scenes in-game cannot be skipped. e.g. the "we can take the safe route or go directly into action"-speech at the beginning

Info on how to Kill Gen RAAM on Insane
The fight is actually pretty straightfoward as long as you are doing it CO-OP.

Both loadup on the sniper rifle (pre-req that someone should get to this stage of the game with one in inventory since there is only 1 provided in the train car prep room.

Have one person grab the torque bow - doesn't matter who. Grenades are optional but help if your a little slow with the sniper rifle, they too can remove the bird shield.

Start fight -
Person with bow launches the first assault to get the "birds" away. As soon as the birds are gone, your partner should immediately start taking direct headshots with the sniper rifle.

The Krill "Birds" form a shield which obviously blocks your shots sniper shots, so don't waste ammo if it's up. You can opt to not use the bow and just have someone stand up to get him to direct his bird attack (which also lowers his shield since they are busy coming for you instead of protecting him)

(Don't bother with other weapons, 16 direct headshots is what it takes on insane) - If you hit anything but the head, it obviously will take a few more shots.

If timed right, it is possible to kill RAAM before he even gets to the wall where you will originally hunker down. If he actually gets into range, both lob granades.

If he makes it past your granades, wait until he is about to round the corner and both jump over the wall and stay there - point blank hit him with any weapon you have - rinse and repeat - don't bother with running to the other side of the train - the reavers always seem to over near the back and do considerably more dmg back there than up at front (since they typically just pass by you)

It might take you a couple rounds to get your timing down with your partner, but it is possible to rip off 8 rounds each to his head before the wall, so try again. If you don't get at least 10 headshots off by the time you start lobbing granades, I'd suggest to just start over since you'll probably end up playing tag a lot longer than you want to.

About Face maneuver
This type of move is done when your character whips around 180 degrees quickly. To perform the move, hold Analog-stick Away to start walking backwards + A for a short time. Release A when your character turns around to perform it. To avoid frag grenades or retreat somewhere fast, keep holding A and Marcus will "roadie run" in the opposite direction.

Defeating Boomers
Boomers have rocket launchers that can usually kill you with one hit. In order to kill them safely, take cover and wait until they shoot at you before you start shooting back. Just as they start reloading is the best time to shoot them, because their gun has a very slow reload. After they reload, hide again and let them fire. Repeat this a few times to kill them.Equip a grenade. After the Boomer fires their weapon, run next to them and press B, then run away. If done correctly, you will hear a sound that indicates that the grenade has attached to the Boomer. You can kill a Boomer instantly and save ammunition by doing this. Another method that can be done later in the game is when you receive the Torque Bow. If you have the Torque Bow, wait until they fire, then launch an arrow at them. This also kills them very quickly.Take cover and wait for the Boomer to reload. Then, use a sniper to shoot him in the head. It will explode after about three shots. When you are reloading let him shoot so that he can reload.Equip a Toque Bow and hold the trigger until you see the arc straighten. This indicates that the bolt will stick. Then, fire it onto the Boomer. It should kill them in one hit, even on the high difficulties.

Defeating Corpser
In Act 3, you are in the Locust tunnels and must plant the Resonater in the building behind a lava filled lake. There are rocks on top of the lava, allowing you to walk across; however, it is not that easy. About one third of the way across an intermission sequence starts, with a giant spider creature, the Corpser. All you need for this battle is a shotgun and machine gun. This will be a fairly long range fight. It is an easy fight but the Wretches that come from everywhere complicate it. When the Corpser raises all his legs and slams them down, your teammate will probably yell "Wretches!". This is your cue to take out a shotgun or use your machine gun. At the beginning you should have a point of interest on the stomach, which is your cue to shoot it. You can always get a shot on it, even when the Corpser shields itself; or you can wait until it tries an attack then shoot its stomach. After that there will be another point of interest, which is in its mouth. When you shoot the stomach it will cringe and its mouth will open as it screams. Then, shoot it in the mouth. While you are doing this, watch out for the Corpser's Ground Pound. It not only brings Wretches (watch the ceiling), but also takes away part of the arena in the back. If your character dies in the back he might be lost. Your ammo cases may also be lost. Keep repeating the process of shooting the stomach and the mouth until the Corpser backs up as far as it. It can no longer be hurt. There will now be a point of interest around the smashable latches. There are two of them. Shoot both of the latches so that they pop, and the platform that the Corpser is on will be sent into the lava.

Easy Clusterluck achievement
Play Act 1 on the Casual difficulty setting. Play the first chapter "14 Days after E-day" until reaching the part where you are about to go outside for the second time. This is when the Locusts are about to break open the door. Run to the door that is not in front of them or you will die. Make sure you have frag grenades equipped. When they break open the door, stick the very first Locust that comes through the door then stand in front of him so he cannot run away. When the grenade explodes it should kill all three of the Locusts and you might survive. If you survived make sure that you killed all three of them then pause the game. Load the last checkpoint and do this ten times. You do not have to survive while trying to get this achievement.

Play the "Evolution" section of Chapter 3. After you rescue the stranded, you will reach a point where you must cross wooden floor boards that may fall away. Cross all the way to the other side where the respawning grenades are located. Stand just at the edge of the planks and wait until a few wretches gather underneath. Then, toss a grenade in the middle of the group, and refill your grenades as needed. To make it even easier, do this in Co-Op mode and have your partner stand on the planks looking down into the pit.

Emergency holes
When an emergence hole opens up, toss a grenade into it. This will automatically close the hole, and therefore keep the locusts from coming out.

Faster reload times
When you press RB to reload, there will be a clear bar with a small white segment somewhere along it. It will appear where your bullets used to be. There will also be a smaller white bar moving across the clear bar. As soon as the white bare gets inside the white segment, press RB again. This will reload your weapon much faster, and if timed just perfectly, will give your gun an extra boost in fire power. However, if you do not time it correctly, the clear bar will become red and it will take even longer to reload than if you had not attempted it.
