The distribution of Grand Theft Auto IV in Thailand could be halted following the confession of a teenager who claimed he robbed and murdered a taxi driver while trying to recreate a scene from the game. According to Reuters, Thai game distributor New Era Interactive Media has requested that shops pull the game from their shelves following the incident, with the company offering to replace it with other games should they co-operate.

An 18-year-old high school student is in custody after Thai police arrested him on Saturday night when he was found driving a taxi backwards down a Bangkok street with the wounded cab driver in the backseat. If the teenager is found guilty of robbing and murdering the 54-year-old cabbie he faces death by lethal injection.

The youth, who has been described as an obsessive player of Grand Theft Auto, apparently confessed to the crime as a result of playing the game, with chief police investigator Veeravit Pipattanasak adding: "He said he wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game." However, according to newspaper reports the suspect admitted he didn't mean to kill the driver, but stabbed him to death when he fought back.

Whether the ban of the game will be enforced across the whole of Thailand remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Rockstar declined to comment on either the ban or the murder.

Stories like this only fuel politicians that want to remove violent video games from store shelves, there has to all ready be something wrong with a person for them to even consider doing something like this, it's a shame this will reflect poorly on GTA IV instead of just on the stupid kid.

At least Jack Thompson was permanently disbarred last month. If he wasn't, I'm sure we wouldn't hear the end of this.

I don't understand why people would want to go out and try and do something they saw in a game. And then when they get caught they blame it on the game. When in relitly its there fault and nothing else. Its people like that who are stupid and shoudn't even own a gamemad

People have been saying video games, music, and pro wrestling cause violence since they found out the columbine kids played DOOM and listened to Marilyn Manson. Human beings have a mysterious force known as free will, you are able to make a consious decision to carry out certain things. The kid that did this made the decision to do this, the video game did not warp his mind and make him do this.

You are absolutely right. Its just that they need something to blame and they look into a persons personal life and those people are usually mentaly disturbed. For one this kid is stupid, no beyond stupid. He cant possibly blame what he did on a video game. It would be like shooting somebody then saying that it was the gun that killed them not me. It does not work that way. As human beings we tend to know when we are doing something wrong. Even when my dog pisses in the floor it runs under the coach because it knows what it has done. Im sure if video games were around when charles manson did all those horrible murders video games and music would be blamed. I think that the only possible way to get the video game companies from out of fire they need to put detailed disclaimers in the game. Maybe this would help those idiots who would normally go crazy not do anything stupid. Of course the politicians would have some way of getting around this. There will always be an idiot who will ruin a great thing for everybody.

Honesty I blame it on bad parenting. They bought a mature game for this kid when it clearly states 17+ on the box. They weren't around when their kid was murdering this cabbie? WTF is wrong with people nowadays? A video game does NOT justify ANYBODYS actions.
