Sunday, May 13- Saturday, May 19,
This week is National Law Enforcement Appreciation week. National Police week was established by a resolution of Congress in 1962 and has been honored since. May 15th is the set day of National Peace Officers Memorial Day where all officers that were killed in the line of duty on the previous year join their fallen brothers on a Memorial wall in Washington, DC. This is a very important week for many, but known by few.
Though the day of May 15th was set in 1962 to be Peace Officers Memorial Day, the Memorial Service did not begin until 1982; where police, families and supporters from all over our great nation gather to to honor all the fallen police that risked their lives protecting and upholding our Constitutional Rights, along with all the current Officers who do so today. This is honored by a Candlelight Vigil, tours of the White House and many other events. Today this Memorial Service draws between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees from Police and Sheriff Departments across the Country!
Though the Memorial Service is only able to be attended by Law Enforcement, supporters and family members of fallen. We can all know about and participate in the good deeds being done in making sure no one who lost there life protecting us is forgotten!
