Here's a before and after of my latest portfolio image. It's a vectored photo manip that contains no pieces of the original image, it's been all painted over.
This is a very long and tedious process that requires a lot of patience.

Before:

After: The photo was enlarged for better size, and then painted over while the original was in low resolution, the sort of phasing between colors is intended for artistic effect.
