Nintendo today announced that it shipped the 100 millionth unit of its DS system on March 9. That’s counting the original chunk-style silver DS, which debuted in 2004, as well as the slimmer DS Lite, which shipped a few years later. The DS’ popularity has extended beyond hardware, too, with 83 titles on the system boasting worldwide sales over 1 million, and seven titles with sales exceeding 10 million.
"Consumers have shown their love for Nintendo DS - 100 million times over," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We are grateful that people of all ages continue to respond to our products, and we will continue to look for ways to please current gamers and create new ones."
Nintendo is launching the third iteration of the DS hardware on April 5. The DSi includes two built-in cameras, as well as support for an online store. It does omit the GBA slot, however, which means that not all games that worked on the DS—such as the portable Guitar Hero titles—will be compatible with the new version.
