Car insurance is not a joke. I found this out the hard way. Hopefully you won't have to find out about car insurance the way I did. I actually thought I had car insurance, little did I know, I did not. Keeping your car insurance records up to date and having the paperwork to prove it can make all the difference in the world.
Every paintball player knows that in order to get to a paintball field, you need a mode of transportation. That transportation is either public or private. Since very few of us can take the bus or train out to the boonies and outskirts of our cities, we usually take our cars. Ah yes, the American dream, the automobile. And of course, we all have car insurance, right?
Last week, while driving to my local paintball field early in the morning, I dosed off and found myself in the farm irrigation runoff ditch. Luckily, the ditch wasn't too full. I called 911 on my cell phone and the police and wrecker arrived shortly. Actually, it was more like 45 minutes, but they came.
It was a cool January Sunday. There wasn't any football on television, so we decided to play paintball. The two weeks between the conference championships and the super bowl is a nice time to get back to paintball on Sundays.
The officer asked for my car insurance card. I handed it to him. He looked at me funny.
“Is everything okay officer?”
“No,” he barked. “Your car insurance expired on the 20th, that's yesterday.”
“It did?” I had no idea and didn't even think about this.
Needless to say, the county I was in was strict about crashing your car, falling asleep, dressed in army fatigues and having no car insurance. If you thought I was having a bad day, it just got worse. We were in an area of Kentucky that really was cracking down on the car insurance problem and he was going to be supercop this morning.
I tried negotiating and talking my way out of not having my updated car insurance card, but nothing seemed to work. To him, not having an updated card was the equivalent of not having car insurance at all. This officer was adamant and thought that car insurance is the most important thing of all. He slapped the handcuffs on me, had the wrecker take my car to the impound lot and put me in a jail holding cell. There are no judges on the weekend, so I had to wait until Monday. Great!
All of this because I was silly and did not have my car insurance up to date. Lesson of the day; if you plan on going to play paintball in northern Kentucky and you haven't slept well, make sure your car insurance is up to date!
Supercop's message; don't mess with car insurance!
