It has been 3 years since Capcom came out with a Resident Evil title and that was Resident Evil 4 for the Gamecube and Playstation 2. Earlier this year Capcom announced the coming of the next story in the zombie killing rampage of a series. Yes, that’s right. Resident Evil 5 is on the tips of our fingers. E3 2008 didn’t do any justice for our yearning to obliterate zombies either with its amazing preview and teaser.
"Sorry to interrupt dinner but...."
The game takes place 10 years after the original Resident Evil left off. Chris Redfield, the game’s main protagonist, has the left the S.T.A.R.S and has joined a new group called the BSAA, who are sent to investigate an incident in the African desert, where this game’s main story takes place. Not much else has been revealed about the game’s plot and setting besides that a portion of the story is to investigate what happened to Chris Redfield and the S.T.A.R.S after the end of the first Resident Evil.
Chris Redfield, your character, has to take on hordes of these guys throughout the game. Thank god for grenades!
The control scheme is said to resemble much of Resident Evil 4 but with a delightful twist. Like before, the aiming of your weapons are very fluid and smooth, a plus when you need to mow down hordes of blood-thirsty zombies, along with using your knife when ammo is on short supply. There is also a whole bunch of shaking your analog stick to free yourself from the zombies when they get to close for comfort. Of course there will be some new features such as interacting with your partner in certain situations, so far Capcom has only released situations of this including step-jumps and leaps. The game play also includes an online co-op play mode which makes the game very compatible for both Xbox live and PS3 Online.
RE5 often goes from times of complete silence to groups of up to 20 zombies at a time groaning and attempting to have a delicious brain dinner.
The graphics of this game are top-notch. Capcom is attempting to stay as close to reality as possible, which goes great with the African setting for this game. Even though the only game play released was a work-in-progress sample, the graphics still blew people’s minds away with the level of detail added to the characters and the hordes of zombies, especially when your shooting a zombie and tentacles burst out of its head, which makes you think of what really happened here. The darker, gray hue of the surroundings gives the game play an ominous feel and the new destructible environment give you an extra pang of fear knowing that there is not one 100% safe place to hide anymore.
Resident Evil 5 looks like an wickedly awesome sequel to the RE series with its action packed game play and intricate story line. Resident Evil 5 is set to ship out on March 13, 2009 to both Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. Happy hunting zombie slayers!
