i know most of us have seen this movie and if by chance you havent watched it before, well go give the movie a chance.
My question to XG member is to the ones that have watched it,how many of you would have did the same thing? i understand this is a general discussion forum, meaning i should be able to discuss anything.
I dont know that i would go to such lengths to save this ryans character i understand he was going through a difficult time but their was still a war at hand would you make saving him your prime objective in that era?

umm yes as a member of the Army, as an NCO and as a future Officer, i can tell you i would do the same thing, orders are orders....doesnt matter if you agree or disagree with them....you have to look at the bigger picture not just whats in front of you this is very true for Officers....

there is a good saying, hindsight is 20/20....some choices may seem to be the best at the time, but then looking back you can say there was a better way, but in war there are split second decisions that have to be made and you can only go off what is infront of you

Ever since I watched the below Youtube vid, I can't take that movie seriously.

From studying WW1 and WW2, and applying myself to this era and film, if I was a soldier in this situation I would find it hard to believe the orders. Considering the huge losses faced by both allied and axis forces in both WW1 and WW2 you wouldn't think they would risk so many lives for just one man who isn't of a high profile (no matter how saddening the story behind him is - then again perhaps they wanted to prevent the 'lost generation' caused by WW1 happening again by at least saving some soldiers and their families from such trauma). Another thing factoring into the equation would be that most of the men going out to save him don't even know him (although yes I know, soldiers are brothers no matter who they are or where they come from).
I guess it just provides insight into how far people are willing to follow authority/ take orders when they are questionable (there are some interesting studies done into people obeying authority) and the concept of 'for the greater good'.

It would be interesting to see a modern day depiction of this story (I think there is one about a female soldier? - but it doesn't follow the storyline of SPR to the degree a new one should).

Anyway, here is the video:

Nice input but you have to understand at this time disobeying an order would literally get shot....and actually from my research on thesis and pre grad research Papers I have found that there were a few times when this was done, a misson for one person.....you just have to understand the times

Saving Private Ryan

I have to agree with Syn BigPoppa, I am also a Army Vet and was also a NCO and even though i didn't agree with my superiors on several instances I always followed the order to the letter, as long as the order was legal and within the guidelines set by Army Regulations.

I have had several NCO and Officers above me, that i questioned how they attained there rank when giving such ludicris orders and that was during peacetime. I would be very uneasy with some of my former superiors commanding in wartime but even then you have to follow orders.

That is the glue that holds the military together, to follow orders without question or prejudice. Now being several years removed from the Military service I no longer have to follow orders from people like that, but what people fail to release is that people like admirals, generals, and commanders have a incredibly stressful job where decisions they make can result in causalties or worse.

That was a good movie, but i dont understand how you lose connection to your squad like that, im sure men were better prepared in situations in becoming lost
