SONY SELLS MILLIONS!!

Sony Sells Millions!!!!
Credits: Gameinformer, Me

Last Friday Nintendo's quarter 1 profits were revealed, and the Wii/DS manufacturers' numbers were not looking quite as heavenly as last year. 2.23 million Wiis were sold the first portion of this year compared to 5.17 million last year, and DS sales dropped from 6.94 million to 5.97 million. Once Nintendo touched the sky, the only place left to go was down, unfortunately. With Sony at the bottom of the barrel, however, the only logical place to go is up.

Sony has recently revealed the sales of their console and handheld platforms since they were first launched. As of June 30th, 2009, Sony has sold 23.8 million of their shiny black behemoths. 55.9 million of the PS3s little brother, the PSP, have found homes in the pockets of consumers.

The numbers don't stop there, however, as Sony is offering some projected PlayStation sales. 13 million additional PS3s are expected to be sold by the end of the year, bringing the total sales up to about 37 million. With expectations to increase their sales by 1/3, one can't help but wonder if the coveted price drop is coming. Sony also expects to move 15 million more PSPs, which will likely be supplemented by the PSP Go's release October 1st.

It's clear that the only place Sony has to go is up, but how far will it go? Will the seemingly unalterable standings of Wii first, Xbox 360 second, and the PS3 last finally be disrupted? Fanboys everywhere froth at the mouths in anticipation.

Who do you want to see come out on top? I want to hear!

I the "Next Gen" releases of our favorite systems I believe that the Xbox is truly the most played system of the three, however the cost of being online to play the system is most likely hurting them in the long run.

I think that Nintendo has it right, they provide a free online gaming experience for all of their games, and run a sort of "Market Place" where they sell more games for direct download onto their system. With the addition of using "Mini-card" memory expansion directly on the front of the system it makes downloading and playing more content easier and less expensive then Xbox Live and the PSN, which both charge not only reoccurring subscription costs, but then also charge for the download of new content and videos.

PSN however has their video's down right. For most of their video download-ables they allow you to not only watch it forever, but they also give you the ability to play those video's on their hand held device, the PSP.

And speaking of cross-network gaming, did anyone else note that Nintendo was the first video game company to connect their hand held system to their hardware platform? People tend to forget this, but when Nintendo released Final-Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the GCN they broke down the wall between the separation of hand-helds and gaming systems. This was for the most part overlooked because it FF:CC was overlooked by many gamers as that it required the link cable to play it in multiplayer.

I think that the one think that Xbox (Microsoft) needs to do to get themselves truly in the field of video games is release a hand-held system. In this they are greatly lacking and falling behind the other systems because I believe that in the future that is going to be a very important part of the "Next Generation" of gaming.

Overall, I sort of disagree with the standings that people give the manufacturers. I think that pure system sales is not enough to separate the best systems from the worst systems. I think there needs to be more involved with it then just purely sales numbers.

While I understand that the companies base themselves off the total unit sales of their systems, they also need to understand that we, the gamers have a different point of view in regards to which systems are the best.

This is how I've broken them down...
Score - ??% - Based on total points out of 25.
System - The over all system score, for design, defectiveness/issues, compatibility with prior systems.
Games - The overall number of games that can be played on the system, including prior generation games.
Ease - The general ease of using the system. (Can a 60 year old pick it up and figure it out?)
Ingenuity - How much of an Engineering impact has the system made?
Rest - Everything else, game play, online use, etc.

1) Nintendo - Wii/DSi (88%)
System - 5/5, the system has had next to no issues from day 1
Games - 5/5, their backwards compatibility is unrivaled
Ease - 5/5, due to the basic controls it's easy to learn
Ingen - 3/5, due to the basic controls, and semi-simplistic games
Rest - 4/5, Free online play, and an abundance of fun to use accessories

2) Sony - PlayStation 3/PSP (76%)
System - 4/5, Nice drive capacity at a slight cost, not too many issues
Games - 5/5, Most of their games are a lot of fun to play
Ease - 3/5, Once again a 16 buttoned controller impedes quick learning
Ingen - 3/5, BlueRay offers a much deeper gameplay then Xbox and Wii
Rest - 4/5, Though their subscription fee exists, a lot of the content is either free or offered at a very low cost. Plus videos are able to be transferred to your PSP for off site viewing, how nice ^.^

3) Microsoft - Xbox/Xbox360 (68%)
System - 2/5, The known RROD, and many tech issues
Games - 4/5, Too many sequels, Arcade games bring back some classics
Ease - 3/5, Lets face it, this isn't your grandma's NES
Ingen - 4/5, They were the first create on Online Game Community (XboxLive)
Rest - 4/5, Live is relatively inexpensive, however the content and accessories are much too expensive.

So there you have my opinion of the current gaming systems and what rank they SHOULD be in.

Consoles are a personal pref. dont get me wrong I hate the ps3 it sucks, but that is only my opinion. I look at it logically our game selection "xbox 360" is unrivaled, and our network, amazing and who really cant come up with 20 dollars every 3 months. The ps3 can surf the net, I have a computer. So if your preference is a sloppy network that doesnt even work half the time and inferior game selections then the ps3 is for you.

Sorry your wrong ps3 does not utilize blue ray in its games and its harddrive stationary. COD MW2 is proven to look better on Xbox 360. wheres the blue ray tech in MW2 it should blow away the 360 according to you and others yet it looks sloppy compared to the 360 version. Trust me I spend time researching and comparing. Sony lies to its users and everyone buys in to it. Xbox will eventually put sony to rest for good as sony did to sega.

The difference between the two graphics wise is trivial. BluRay is utilized when talking exclusives, hence Uncharted 2> Gears of War 2. The 360 is easier to develope on which is why multi-platform games look better on the 360. Don't make yourself look like such a fanboy. Microsoft will put Sony to rest? Sounds like you have some sort of weird vendetta against any console that isn't the 360. Sony lies to its users? Please. I'm on my fifth Xbox and the damn thing still doesn't work right. So much time devoted to false 'researching' seems waisted.
