THE LONG NIGHT

The Long Night
By: Angryarmadillo6

I lay in bed and wonder
When will sleep find me
Take me to that special place
Where soldiers stand by me

Days are long, hours go by
And when the work day is through
There is one little thing
I like to sit and do

I walk in the door
Say hello my friends
That's when he asks me
A bottle or a can

I walk in with no intention
Of feeling sad or blue or down
I sit in the barstool
With no one around

He hands me a bottle
I pop the top again
For the luiquid in the bottle
Brings the memory of my friends

I pour one back down it goes
Again and again
After three or four
Soon it will be ten

All the memories flood on back
A time I dare not go
A time of sorrow and of grief
A memory I wish it were not so

They were not all bad
These memories I do have
This beer is for you
For the one you can no longer have

You served your country well
The life u did so give
I lost my friends
How I wish you could have lived

I will not cry tonight
For you did what had to be done
You made the ultimate sacrifice
Every single one

This is my last one
I'm finally to number ten
But ill have only one more
Cause if you were here you would tell me i can

I finally make it home
In my bed I go
I close my eyes again
To sleep I must go

But I lay here and wonder
When will sleep find me
A sleep we all search after
With god we will see

The sleep of a lifetime
Where my fellow soldiers and family rest
In heaven I will find you
Where you all look y'all's best

Without really going into anything, this really touched me. I've drank many a times to celebrate my memories and then to wrestle them down. Great poem.
