If you’re still on the fence about making the plunge for either an Xbox One or a PS4, this might be a good time to do it. Amazon is offering a pretty impressive bundle for Microsoft’s console: for $349, you get an Xbox One, Assassin’s Creed: Unity, Assassin’s: Black Flag, Wolfenstein: The New Order and an extra controller for those rare moments of local co-op left in our modern video game world. So that’s two excellent games and one more or less fine game, a controller and a console for $349. Not bad. Microsoft may have momentarily jacked the price of its machine back up to $399 after the holidays, but things like this bundle prove that the company is as committed as ever to its aggressive pricing strategy.
Wolfenstein: The New Order was one of the best releases of 2014, even if it landed with a slightly smaller splash than some of its AAA brethren. It’s a classic “if the Nazis won” dystopia that still manages an impressive amount of heart in the midst of what could have been a bland story. It’s a throwback to a time before regenerating health, and it can be punishingly difficult for those willing to up the difficulty. Also, moon nazis. On top of that, you get Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, which was one of the best games of 2013 and arguably the best Assassin’s Creed so far. It doesn’t have that next-gen graphical flair, but it’s probably the best pirate game I’ve ever played. Assassin’s Creed: unity launched as sort of a mess, but a few patches later and it’s a perfectly acceptable entry in the series, if far from from the best. None of the games actually make use of the second controller, but hey, good to have around.
Bundles have been Microsoft’s weapon of choice in the discounting war so far: software is often a hidden cost in the price of a new console, but ever since September it’s been pretty easy to pick up at least two free games with a new Xbox One. That, along with the $349 price tag, served the company well through 2014: Xbox beat out PS4 for the crucial months of November and December, giving it a much needed boost in the lopsided console war. But Sony's Ps4 emerged back on top for january, and it’s clear that if Microsoft wants to stay in the game, it’s going to need to keep making sure that the Xbox One deals remain enticing enough to draw people away from Sony’s dominant PS4.
