Heres a pretty cool tutorial I found a while back & attempted. I made it as a profile picture originally and it was later resized to be an avatar. I found the tutorial easy to follow. This works best if you use a thick font for the main text and a smaller font for the background text. The tutorial is originally for a wallpaper sized image, but it can be applied to any size really.
