I don't know... I'm kinda mixed about this game. Lets start with positives; I thought that the story was AMAZING. I cannot over-exaggerate how much praise I have for the story, especially the protaganist, Niko Bellic. In the ways of character development, Niko, a Serbian immagrant, comes to America via boat for reasons that develop along with the plotline. As the game progresses, Niko's intentions become less enshrouded, leading to a choice (yes a choice coughkotorcough) when you encounter the man Niko has been searching for all these years. My favorite NPC is a rastafarian (Jamaican) named Little Jacob. He helps you get situated but kinda fades in importance towards the end, and is more or less replaced by a loudmouth Irishman named Packie. On to gameplay, the controls just sink into your palm, almsot like you are Niko. The controls are really tight and the targeting system is second-to-none when it comes 3rd person shooters.
Rockstar did a good job adding some cool new stuff in such as a workable cell phone so you can call people (and 911 lol), use police computers in cop cars, free cab/ chopper rides when you make friends with a character, jobs for people, a fake internet browser from a company/ internet cafe called "tw@" (awesome if you get the joke in the name lol), and the list goes on. The problem is that, short of the cell phone, you never have to touch any of this bonus content, for very long at the most. Unless you are trying to earn some achievements, none of this plays a large role in the game and plot development. Another thing is that they seriously cut down on the weapons (2 AR's, 2 SMG's, 2 Pistols, 2 Grenades, 2 Snipers, 1 RPG and body armor) which was a stark contrast to the way they had been developing the games. Rather than expanding on the weapons, the part of the game that is just about as important as cars, was cut back on, while useless parts (a 3d tetris-ish arcade game), used only as achievements, took a larger role, which was my biggest disappointment.
To anyone who played the original GTA games like Vice City and San Andreas expect the car system to be TOTALLY revamped. The ole "turn-on-a-dime" system, where you could make sharp turns while flyin down the road, has been replace with a more lifelike system. Whether this is good or bad is up to you, but it was bittersweet to me. Some car chases made for very cinematic events (chasing down some guy on a bike and the car you are in flies from the perpendicular street- sideways) which was cool but it takes some time to master. Thats all I really have to say, and I know this played out like a review, but I would like to hear you opinions on the matter too.
