(I write this article from the first-person narrative of a female who feels the need to stand up for her fellow gamers.)
Yes - perhaps I am outspoken. Perhaps I am opinionated. Perhaps I over-step boundaries that were made for me. Perhaps I am targeted because I am a female - perhaps, in some aspects, I am not targeted, because I am a female.
I write this because I feel the need to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Hosting a ladies' night on XBox Live is like putting a target on all of my fellow female gamer's backs and screaming "Insult us, we are girls."
Girls don't belong on video games. Girls belong in the kitchen. Girls? Ohh do you want to (use your imagination here)... etc, etc.
By entering a room with my fellow party-mates, we enter a war-zone, one that few males in XG even begin to comprehend. Yes, when I was in XGC I heard the XGC "Extra *** Clan" bull. Yes, being in a room with a girl, you hear some of the stuff that happens, but you can still stand up for them. The veil of anonymity that gamers feel covers them while they trash-talk seems to exponentially strengthen when a female is in the room. Insults to XG do not hold a candle to people dropping the C bomb for no reason other than you telling them that you are not a 12-year-old boy.
I do not blame those girls that mute their mics. I know of a girl who was stalked in her hometown because she put too much trust in the males on XBL - let people know the name of your town... one thinks that people that you game with on a daily basis would not feel the need to visit you without your consent. When you have to call the police and put out a restraining order on someone you hadn't previously met in person, you come to me, ok?
I do have to say that I have wondered if someone was going to show up on my doorstep without my authorization. I have regretted giving out my address for seemingly inconspicuous purposes. I do, however, know that I could personally kick the crap out of my brother who is a full foot taller than me. I have an advantage that other girls on XBL may not (but don't underestimate ANY of them!), and that is I am a fighter.
I have also met some fantastic people on XBL. People that I trust - people that I have had in my home after a night of drinking, knowing that I was safe - friends that I will cherish (you know who you are - and you still should meet my brother ).
I will protect my girls until my dying day. You mess with one, you mess with all of us. I do not care who I have to go through. I do not care who it is that speaks badly of them. Talk all that you want about me. But you start talking about my girls and you will have to face me. That is what I have learned from XBL. That is what XGG is all about. Those who think that the Gamer Girlz are an afterthought in XG have another thing coming - we rule, and boys still drool!
