Microsoft lengthens Xbox 360 warranty
Microsoft extends the warranty coverage on its Xbox 360 console.
By Ben Silverman

No longer content adhering to the adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," Microsoft on Thursday announced that it will extend its Xbox 360 warranty coverage to three years from date of purchase. The warranty covers any consumer who experiences the general system failure indicated by three flashing red lights, more commonly referred to as the "red ring of death." Both shipping and repair costs will be covered.

The new warranty will represent a $1 billion pre-tax charge on Microsoft's earnings for the year's final quarter. This marks a notable setback for the company's Entertainment & Devices division, who reported a $315 million operating loss in the third quarter.

"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one. But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division.

The warranty also retroactively reimburses the small but vocal community of console owners who have already paid to get the error fixed. Though the company has not revealed the cause behind the hardware malfunctions, it claims to have "identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures" and "has made improvements to the console."

The announcement is intended to soothe the tide of disgruntled gamers who have experienced the failure, many of whom have meticulously documented numerous failed attempts at getting it repaired. In a conference call, Bach acknowledged an increase in the amount of attention the issue has been receiving. Although he didn't mention a specific number of problems, he called the rate of repair requests "too high for our liking."

Peter Moore, corporate VP of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, has posted an open letter on the official Xbox site further explaining the decision.

Yeah I just called them on Wednesday night and I gotta "coffin" coming in the mail so I can get mine replaced. At first it was gonna cost me $139.90, cause my 360 is out of warranty, but since this has gone in to effect I'm getting it repaired for free!......except you don't get an extended warranty if you get it fixed for free.....if you pay the new amount of $99 to get your box repaired you get the warranty....

yeah i sent mine back Thursday... and least it goes peacefully on its "final journey".. hell they even give you everything you need to send it back... to awesome blue Styrofoam pieces and nice clean bag and TAPE they give you TAPE....oh yeah and don't forget to write your reference Number on a piece paper and stick it inside the bag with your 360... also you need to write the same number on the outside of the shipping box... i put it on there twice one below the label and one on the opposite end

nah you wanna know the kicker of it all... how my 360 broke... "The Darkness" yeah i rented it from Gamefly popped it in and it frozen my box right on the main menu... turned my box off then back on and BAM!! three flashing red lights of death... like one red light isn't enough they gotta throw three at you... eh im still a little erked that gamefly ain't gonna do anything about it. they keep hiding behind there, "oh we have an as is policy that says where not responsible for anything that happens to your system if we fail to test to make sure the discs work

Mine currently won't play any of the XBOX original games, but there are not other issues with freezing or the like. So fingers are crossed that it won't completly go.

mine is still working and i hope it will continue to do so for a long time
breaks sometimes by overheating, general wear and tear of constant usage, being banged or damaged, same basic things that affect computers in general

I really like the idea of a 3 year warranty. I'm on my 3rd 360! XD I have one right now that needs to be fixed.......hopefully I will get it fixed for free now. Even if I get an added warranty on it or not............I just hope that if it goes down again, I will still get it fixed for nothing. If I have to end up paying and keep paying for every time it dies, I will have put more money into getting it fixed than what I paid for the thing!

wow, nice gun at the top. this doesn't matter at all because 1. they aren't really losing that much and 2. they jack up the prices on all other xbox 360 ****.... including games. i mean come on it doesn't take $50 to make one disc
