Thank you both for your constructive criticism - always great to have trained, fresh eyes point out the little things I miss or can tweek to be more ascetic!!! I think, to be really great at this, one needs to know that they'll always have things to improve upon. Much appreciated!
Ok, on to this image - which I had a lot of fun with, getting an idea and then tweaking here and there. I'm pretty happy with it but I already see something I didn't catch. When I used the Gaussian blur (used a lot in the past and love it), it was after I placed the border, so the border shows the effects of the image - ugg, anyway... here is the Before and After pics

great use of your editing tools! if i could throw a suggestion your way though; there are many ways to draw attention to your focal, one of which being size. with a character like this one, most of the attention is drawn towards the face and wings, but not the legs. you can draw more focal to those areas by zooming in on your character so that the legs are no longer visible. it is good to think about this when thinking about the rule of thirds
