Six Days in Fallujah Stirring Controversy

It has been only a day since the news broke of Konami's plan to publish Six Days in Fallujah, but the game is already sparking anger as well as calls for a ban.

To be sure, releasing a video game based on one of the bloodiest and most controversial actions of the Iraq War is a public relations gamble for Konami and developer Atomic Games - especially since the war is still going on.

Early negative reactions to Six Days in Fallujah have been both sharp and diverse, with a decorated British Army officer and a representative of a U.K. peace group both expressing outrage over the game.

The U.K.'s Daily Mail reports complaints about Six Days in Fallujah by the father of a Royal Marine who died in the Iraq War. Reg Keys, whose son Thomas was killed in 2003, said:

Considering the enormous loss of life in the Iraq War, glorifying it in a video game demonstrates very poor judgement and bad taste... These horrific events should be confined to the annals of history, not trivialised and rendered for thrill-seekers to play out...

It's entirely possible that Muslim families will buy the game, and for them it may prove particularly harrowing. Even worse, it could end up in the hands of a fanatical young Muslim and incite him to consider some form of retaliation or retribution...

I will be calling for this game to be banned, if not worldwide then certainly in the UK.
Meanwhile, former colonel Tim Collins OBE, a decorated Iraq War veteran, was equally aghast:

It's much too soon to start making video games about a war that's still going on, and an extremely flippant response to one of the most important events in modern history. It's particularly insensitive given what happened in Fallujah, and I will certainly oppose the release of this game.

I would say it is definitely too early for this to be released. It is not a proper way to remember our fallen brothers who did not come home. I would agree that glorifying this engagment for thrill seekers is indeed in bad taste.

i dont think they should make this game because what happen in fallujah should stay in fallujah it was nothing but a blood bath i have lost friends in this stupid war i think fallujah should be forgotten but not the men who have died and live be not forgotten.

It is both disrespectful and distasteful. Konami should be ashamed for creating this, and the employee's should be even more ashamed for working on it.

So why do we make more WW2 or WW1 games?

Are those games also "glorifying" those wars but i still see people play CoD WaW or COD 3

Your right...but when do we draw the line? I believe many are insensitive to the World Wars only because it was not in their time. This game is bringing a current event to life. I just feel bad for the families of these men and woman that gave their lives. Konami has no right to turn warm blood into profit, and that it is why I disagree with the creation of this game.

So your saying that as long as the war is not current its ok? so in about 10 years this game could come out?

Does CoD 4 not put you in a Middle east ? Fighting a similar fight to the Iraq war?

I'm saying the game is based on a actual fight that happened. It is one thing to make a game, but it is entirely different when the game lives out a recent event. I never said any game based on a war is good, you put those those words in my mouth. Read what I put again in the above comment.

In 10 years I will not be a gamer and it will be irrelavent. CoD 4 is not based on the actual Iraq war. It is a game based on war in general, and in no way brings any battles fought in Iraq to life.

Either way, this is not the right time for this game. Making the game about an event such as this should not be done. Just as a game having you take the place of a marine on Iwo Jima. Both were traumatic events that should be left to the troupes that lived them.

you could try to look at it this way. people that do play this game might have a more positive outlook towards our troops and what they went thru, and are going thru

Look at September 11th. Most Americans have forgotten, and therefore like all tragedies, it is human nature to move on. All blood turns cold...

Forgotten? Complacent? Or just plain apathetic.

I draw the line on this game as well, speaking simply from a historical aspect. Fallujah is still fresh in the minds of a lot of people who care, to other people out there it's simply a news article, or a statistic, or just a simple event that happened halfway across the world.

Konami should be absolutely ashamed, glorifying a bloodbath such as Fallujah like this, when even historians have not sat down and debated it.

And Rezlient, I have to respectfully disagree with your statement, the people who play this don't give two S**** about the people it represents. Simply because they are graphics, they are fictionalized avatars that have zero bearing on ones life. Gamers by and far have zero care for historical or current events, what they care for is getting a quick fix from a game.

Glorifying a battle in a conflict that has yet to resolve, with the smoke still rising over it, absolutely despicable, and I hope it gets boycotted.

It is not about other people, its about the troupes that were there. I know i dont give a damn what people think or say about what I did when i was in. And I know many others feel the same way. we did our job. And if it were a game about some of our endevours. I would not want people to to be exploiting it.

the wounds of battle may heal, but memories are fresh until death. the brave men and women who are actually out there, defending thier freedom with thier own blood deserve better than this game. this is not what they are fighting for.

Jerriel also raises a great point. they only push out more WWII games because to this modern generation of Ipods and Xboxs it is nothing more than the pages of history, waiting to be torn open and created in pixels to sell units.
most, if not all game developers actually care about the history of the wars that are raging. as long as they meet targets they win all the time, and if you were to ask me, this is not the way that our fallen brothers should be honored. the people who have given us thier lives, so that we may live ours should deserve better than a video game in one of the most bloodiest battles.

and that british dude saying things about a muslim boy who could pick up this game and suddenly be influenced to kill his fellow countrymen, is complete and utter BS, and being a British person myself, i consider his views racist and void of any truth. you dont need to be a muslim to suddenly become a terrorist. the Irish proved that in thier civil war, and then the British army sent over some troops to keep the peace in Northen Ireland. yet we dont see a game about Irish terrorists blowing up Big Ben.

yes, i think the game should be canned, but maybe with this controversy the game might just be released anyway just to make people buy it because of the hype. will it happen? god knows. i hope not. we shall see.

I know this war sucks trust me. I think this game needs to be made. because people don't realize how lucky we are that this battle is going on.

War With Vietnam: 58,196 Deaths (100,000+ M.I.A)

World War 2: 406,000 (AMERICAN'S ONLY)

Civil War: 600,000

War in Iraq: 155,104

Look at those #'s and how small they are compared to one and other, Death is never good and I feel sad for those who do lose a loved one. But we must remember they signed up for this, they knew what they are risking. My cuz is proud to be a marine and when the **** gets deep he fights harder thats how it goes. You may lose someone but they are never left behind. Death is not right but these marines who want there story heard have every right too let it be heard. Somone in this forum earlier sad that what happen in Fallujah should stay there it was sick. That is wrong, We and the rest of this world have a right to see what we want. If we hid or just spoke of the day you would never fully understand it. Try reading a history book with no pictures attached. I mean even the bible has pictures. Like people need to know and there is no better time then now. So let it be unleash this game and let the world feel what its like to be in the **** and maybe this game will press the limit so hard that people might speak up more and get the president to take some more action.

This game is only making a better future.

Each person has their own perspective on this issue, and yours may be true for some of the men and woman in the current war. Regardless when a soldier dies he only brings greif to the people who loved him, and therefore to exploit this bloodshed is to only cause the many families who lost loved ones more greif.

Bottom line is this, the gaming market needs to respect and honor the fallen. Not use the fallen as a way to make money. It is both unAmerican and inhuman to make profit on the death of others.
